What is Business Intelligence Software?

Business Intelligence (BI) is a software technology in which its primary function is to gather, analyze, and present business data into structured reports and other formats which can help an organization on its strategic planning and accurate decision making. The BI process starts from multiple data sources, then the data is extracted, transformed, and loaded (ETL) into Analytic Data Structures. The terms Data Warehousing and Data Mining aid in the organization, storage, and retrieval of data. History of Business Intelligence

It was in 1865 when the term “Business Intelligence” was first mentioned on a certain business publication. It was used to describe the exceptional act shown by a banker named Sir Henry Furnese. As a businessman, Furnese was able to maintain a complete and perfect train of business intelligence. During the 1960’s, BI became a major component of the so-called Decision Support Systems (DSS). Innovations in DSS were further expanded during the 1980s and Business Intelligence was then used profoundly. In the late 1980s, it was Howard Dresner of the Gartner Group who proposed BI to be the core methodology behind the use of fact-based support systems. From then onward, business intelligence has been globally known as a system or tool for information analysis and decision support.

Types of Business Intelligence Tools

Many modern BI tools are equipped with these three important data warehouse functionalities: Extract, transform, and load (ETL), Data Management, and Data Warehousing. Real-time data processing, also one of BI’s capabilities, employs three important processing techniques: Enterprise Information Integration (EII), Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), and Complex Event Processing (CEP). Another computer processing technology that runs behind BI tools is the Online Analytical Processing (OLAP).
